Is feeling tired normal aging ?
A common misconception with aging is that it’s natural to feel tired. Some older Americans believe that feeling tired and rundown comes with aging. Judith Graham, withKaiser Health News, observes that feeling tired is not “normal aging.” She interviewed Dr. Christopher Callahan, director of the Center for Aging Research at Indiana University’s School of Medicine, to get his opinion. He told her, “Fatigue, weakness and depression, among several other common concerns, aren’t to-be-expected consequences of growing older.”
It’s important to pay attention to body signals, as they may indicate that a medical evaluation is in order. The earlier health concerns are checked out, the better the outcome. The goal is to be in good health for a long time, and take advantage of available remedies to common problems. Here are some tips on maintaining optimum health.
If you’re experiencing fatigue (“I’m tired most of time, and I don’t have any energy.”): There is a real impact to “slowing down,” including social isolation and loss of independence. Health care providers can determine the root cause for the fatigue, e.g., blood pressure medications, infections, arthritis, underactive thyroids, alcohol use, and poor nutrition. Each cause can be treated, along with pushing yourself to move around more each day. In some cases, physical or occupational therapy will help individuals regain normal energy levels.
Appetite loss (“I’m losing weight, and I don’t feel hungry.”): Underlying causes could include the physical changes associated with aging (some vision, taste, and smell reduction – these all contribute to making food more appealing), dental problems, infections and illnesses, some medications (which can reduce taste and smell and sometimes cause nausea), constipation, and reduced saliva production. Treating these should add to an improved appetite, and individuals can also add spices to food to make them more appealing, share mealtimes with others, and adjust medications.

Dear Marci,
Dear Marci,
I have Medicare Part A and Part B, but I also have another health insurance policy from my current job. How does Medicare work with my other coverage, and do I need to tell my doctor if I have more than one type of insurance?
– Cole (Lafayette, CO)
Dear Cole,
Your current employee insurance may pay primary to Medicare. Whether it will pay primary or not depends on how you are eligible for Medicare and how many people work at the company that provides the insurance.
Insurance from your or your spouse’s current employment pays primary to Medicare if you (a) are eligible for Medicare because you are 65 or older and the company has 20 or more employees, or (b) are eligible for Medicare because you have received Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) payments for more than 24 months and the company has 100 or more employees.
Note that if you have Medicare because you have received SSDI payments for more than 24 months, the insurance based on current employment can also be from a family member’s current work. This is an important distinction, because if you are eligible for Medicare due to age, the current employment-based coverage can only be from your or your spouse’s current work.
Insurance from current employment can be from a private company (such as a bank or small business), a union, or a Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP) plan, which is a type of current employee coverage available through the Health Insurance Marketplace. If you or your spouse are currently working for the federal government and covered by Federal Employee Health Benefits (FEHB), the rules are the same. FEHB always pays primary to Medicare because the federal government has more than 100 employees.
Insurance from your or your spouse’s current employment pays secondary to Medicare if you (a) are eligible for Medicare because you are 65 or older and the company has fewer than 20 employees, or (b) are eligible for Medicare because you have received SSDI payments for more than 24 months and the company hasfewer than 100 employees (note that if you have Medicare due to disability, the insurance based on current employment can also be from a family member’s current work).
Cole, you should inform your doctor about any different insurance that you have in order to avoid any billing or coverage problems. You can do this by showing your different health insurance cards at the front desk to ensure that your file is up to date. It is important to let your providers know which insurance is primary and which is secondary so that there are no problems. If your secondary insurance is billed first, for example, you may experience coverage denials or other difficulties accessing services because your secondary insurance will not pay until the primary insurance does.
If you have questions about how your other insurance works with Medicare, you can contact the Benefits Coordination and Recovery Center (BCRC) at 855-798-2627 (TTY/TTD: 855-797-2627).

Helping others deal with stress !
How can we help others who are suffering from stress? Is there a healthy option? Do we have the skills needed to help? Yes! We must extend ourselves for others in simple yet positive ways.
If you know someone that is dealing with a lot of stress, you may want to help him or her deal with it. You can do some things in order to get them through their difficult periods and continue to see them through the entire dilemma that stress can bring to someone’s life. It is important for you to be a good method of support for them and to let them know that you are always going to be there for them.
If you are trying to help someone with stress, you need to be a good support for him or her. Call them as often as you can. Ask how they are doing and if they need anything. Be there for the person when they want to talk and open up about things. This can be one of the best ways to help someone that is dealing with stress and needs to find help.
If a person is alone, you can call them up and ask them to dinner. Invite them over to the house to watch a movie or play board games. Do anything that you can in order to involve them in some form of physical activity. If they are depressed from stress, being alone may only add to their problems and may even create more stress in the end.
Being a true friend means being there to lend a hand and help when necessary. When a person is suffering from stress, they may not ask for the help that they want. It is important that you are looking for the signs and know when you need to intervene with some help. You can make a difference to them just by being their friend. This is the most that you can do for them to help them in a bad situation.
Watch for the warning signs of stress and the depression that it can cause. Look for signs of distress like not eating, staying at home all the time, pushing away friends and loved ones, not going to work and if their appearance suddenly changes. These are all signs that there may be a problem in their life and they may need to have a little extra attention from their friends and other method of support.
Just be a friend and help them get through the tough times. Offer you hand and tell them that it will be all right. This is the most effective way that you can help someone when they are dealing with stress.
