Doctors and nurses wash their hands frequently to stop the spread of sickness and disease in hospitals and other health care facilities. However, a new research study has found that patients should also take precautions to decrease the spread of disease. At certain facilities in Detroit, a study found that almost one in four adults had a virus or bacteria on their hands after leaving the facility. The standard perspective is that most diseases are spread by doctors, but an increasing number of studies have found that patients play a role in transmitting diseases as well. The authors of the study suggest that hand hygiene policies be revised to include patients. Hospitals and other facilities should also post reminders for patients, informing them that they should be washing their hands. To read more about the results of this study,
About Growing Older by Will Rogers
Will Rogers, who died before most of us were born, remains one of our finest humorists. Here are some of his musings.
First- Eventually you will reach a point when you stop lying about your age and start bragging about it.
Second- The older we get, the fewer things seem worth standing in line for.
Third- Some people try to turn back their odometers. Not me; I want people to know why I look this way. I’ve traveled a long way, and some of the roads weren’t paved.
Fourth- When you are dissatisfied and want to go back to your youth, think of Algebra.
Fifth- You know you are getting old when everything either dries up or leaks.
Sixth- I don’t know how I got over the hill without getting to the top.
Seventh- One of the many things no one tells you about aging is that it is such a nice change from being young.
Eighth- One must wait until evening to see how splendid the day has been.
Ninth- Being young is beautiful, but being old is comfortable.
Tenth- Long ago when men cursed and beat the ground with sticks it was called witchcraft. Today it’s called golf.
And finally, If you don’t learn to laugh at trouble, you won’t have anything to laugh at when you are old.
Senior Driving Tip !
Driving can become more difficult for people as they age, and some changes make driving more dangerous if proper precautions are not taken. Older adults may have stiffer joints and muscles, which can affect their ability to turn the steering wheel or brake safely. An individual may also find that it is harder to see road signs and notice sounds, such as horns. Additionally, older adults may have slower reaction times and reflexes. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) has many suggestions for how older adults can make sure they are staying safe on the road. They suggest that older adults:
- Get vision check-ups once every one or two years and keep eyeglass prescriptions current
- Drive a car with large mirrors and power steering
- See a doctor if stiffness or arthritis seems to get in the way of driving
- Start breaking earlier and keep a bigger distance from the car in front of them
- Avoid high traffic areas when possible
Improve your life one bite at a time !
Life is what you make of it! But you need a game plan. It is hard to make progress in every area of your life at the same time. Too often we are two steps forward and one step back folks. But guess what? That’s progress!
I don’t have all the answers. As a matter of fact, my wife thinks I don’t have any of them most of the time. That is another story. Let me tell you what I believe. Each of us must take the time to look within and find out who we are, what we want and how we can get to our desired future.
As we look within, we need to break our lives down into areas for review and goal setting. All of us have health and fitness at the core of our concerns. If we don’t take care of our bodies, we won’t be able to take care of anything. Life styles need to be reviewed and improvements made one bite at a time.
It’s not just your body. In order to improve yourself, you need to develop your mind and enlarge your spirit. Yes, you need to look at what is going on in your mind. It can be scary. There are ways to improve your spirit. It begins with self examination and taking small actions.
Whether you are working outside the home or not, work consumes much of your time. How can we be more productive and improve the working environment? It begins with a hard look at your obligations and expectations.
Do you have to look at your finances? Yes! What about family and other relationships? Yes, again. In order to increase your overall well being, you have to dig deep within yourself. Once you know yourself you are in a position to put in place your overall self improvement plan.
Your plan needs to to include all the areas that have been reviewed here. But you need to take it one bite at a time.
Be sure to keep this in mind: life is a marathon not a sprint. Be gentle with yourself!
No matter how well you plan. No matter how excellent your execution. There will come a time when you fall short of the mark you have set. Forgive yourself. Refresh your plan and move forward. You can succeed. You will succeed. One bite at a time.
Distracted driving the cause of many accidents !
Driving distractions are an increasing occurrence in America due to the growing use of hand-held devices. Driving is a skill that requires your full attention to safely control your vehicle and respond to events happening on the roads around you. Driving involves constant and complex coordination between your mind and body. Any event or thing that prevents you from operating your car safely is considered a distraction. For example, driving while using a hand-held device increases the likelihood you will be in a car accident by 400%. This has been a factor that has influenced recent restrictive legislation in our state banning hand-held devices while operating a vehicle.
While using cell phones behind the wheel is one of the most talked about driving distractions, it’s not the only one out there. There are many other things that we do behind the wheel that you may be surprised to find are considered driving distractions!
While the list could be endless, the main types of driving distractions include:
- Texting
- Reading a book
- Using a cell phone
- Eating or drinking
- Smoking and dealing with lighting up
- Personal grooming
- Reading maps
- Using a navigation system
- Talking to passengers
- Watching a video
- Adjusting a radio
Driver distractions are the leading cause of most vehicle crashes and near-crashes. According to a study released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI), 80% of crashes, and 65% of near-crashes, involve some form of driver distraction. The distraction occurred within three seconds prior to the vehicle crash!
When you are driving, the condition of the roadway you are on and the behavior of other drivers can change abruptly, leaving you little or no time to react. When you are driving, follow these rules:
- Stay focused
- Pay attention
- Expect the unexpected
