Stopping aspirin treatment raises cardiovascular risk by over a third !

New research published in the journal Circulation suggests that interrupting long-term, low-dose aspirin treatment may increase the likelihood of a second stroke or heart attack.

Researchers led by Johan Sundström, a professor of epidemiology at Uppsala University in Sweden, set out to examine the effect of stopping low-dose aspirin treatment on the odds of having a second heart attack or stroke.

The American Heart Association (AHA) recommend that people at risk of having a heart attack take low-dose aspirin preventively. Aspirin is also recommended by the AHA to heart attack and stroke survivors, in order to avoid recurrence.

That being said, previous research – referenced by the authors in their new study – shows that 10 to 20 percent of the patients advised to continue taking aspirin preventively choose to ignore the advice.

Boost weight loss by taking 2-week dieting breaks, says study !

If you’re dieting, you may want to think about taking 2 weeks out; it could help you to lose the pounds and keep them off. This is the conclusion of a new study, which found that continuous dieting may actually hinder weight loss.

Study leader Nuala Byrne, a professor in the School of Health Sciences at the University of Tasmania in Australia, and colleagues recently reported their findings in the International Journal of Obesity.

It is estimated that every year, around 45 million people in the United States go on a diet, primarily with the aim of losing weight.

But, as many who have dieted will be well aware, sticking to a diet plan 7 days per week can be a challenge. The new study, however, suggests that we should not feel guilty about taking a short break from dieting, as it may actually help with weight loss.

Study shows so-called ‘healthy obesity’ is harmful to cardiovascular heath!

Clinicians are being warned not to ignore the increased cardiovascular health risks of those who are classed as either ‘healthy obese’ or deemed to be ‘normal weight’ but have metabolic abnormalities such as diabetes.

Academics at the University of Birmingham’s Institute of Applied Health Research carried out the largest study of its kind to date comparing weight and metabolic status to cardiovascular disease risks, published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.

The study showed that individuals who are ‘metabolically healthy obese’ (MHO) – those who are obese but do not suffer metabolic abnormalities such as diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol – have an increased risk of cardiovascular disease events compared to those who are normal weight without metabolic abnormalities.

The academics used electronic health records of 3.5 million British adults who were all initially free of cardiovascular disease (CVD). They then revisited each patient’s record, at an average of 5 years and four months later, in order to assess whether they had gone on to develop each of four kinds of CVD events – coronary heart disease (CHD), cerebrovascular disease (in particular strokes), heart failure, or peripheral vascular disease (PVD).

Lower back pain may all be in the mind, study suggests !

A new study into the neuroscience of clinical pain suggests that perceptions of stiffness may not reflect the actual state of the spine and joints. The team’s findings may pave the way for new therapies that help those with chronic pain in their lower back.

Lower back pain is a leading cause of disability worldwide, affecting around 9.4 percent of the global population.

Sometimes, people with lower back pain do not manage to get rid of the pain. In fact, it is estimated that for approximately 20 percent of those with the condition, the pain evolves into chronic pain – that is, pain that does not ease for 12 weeks or more.

But might the discomfort all be a matter of perception? Could feeling pain not necessarily reflect the state that our body is in? A new study published in the journal Scientific Reports suggests so.

What happens to the brain as we age ?

Brain aging is inevitable to some extent, but not uniform; it affects everyone, or every brain, differently. Slowing down brain aging or stopping it altogether would be the ultimate elixir to achieve eternal youth. Is brain aging a slippery slope that we need to accept? Or are there steps we can take to reduce the rate of decline?

At around 3 pounds in weight, the human brain is a staggering feat of engineering with around 100 billion neurons interconnected via trillions of synapses.

Throughout our lifetime our brain changes more than any other part of our body. From the moment the brain begins to develop in the third week of gestation to old age, its complex structures and functions are changing, networks and pathways connecting and severing.

During the first few years of life, a child’s brain forms more than 1 million new neural connections every second. The size of the brain increases fourfold in the preschool period and by age 6 reaches around 90 percent of adult volume.

The frontal lobes – the area of the brain responsible for executive functions, such as planning, working memory, and impulse control – are among the last areas of the brain to mature, and they may not be fully developed until 35 years of age.
