Many people have high blood pressure, also known as hypertension, without even knowing it. But, while high blood pressure may not make you look or feel ill, it can put you at risk of stroke, heart disease, eye problems, kidney failure, and other health problems. You should regularly see your doctor and have them check your blood pressure, as this may allow your doctor to pick up an early rise in blood pressure.
If you already have high blood pressure, your doctor may suggest specific changes to your diet or may prescribe you medication. In general, to maintain a healthy blood pressure, the National Institute on Aging suggests the following:
- Keep a healthy weight
- Exercise every day
- Eat a healthy diet
- Cut down on salt
- Drink less alcohol
- Don’t smoke
- Get a good night’s sleep
- Manage stress.
