For so many of us healthy living is something we are going to get to tomorrow. Most of us begin our healthy living campaign right after a less than perfect diagnosis from the doctor. We really, really plan to make these changes. Some are successful, some are not.
Instead of working on a huge makeover, why not take little steps. You will find that smaller changes are easier to maintain. It may take longer but you have a better chance of staying the course. Who knows, you may be encouraged to go on to bigger changes.
- Begin a walking program. Start with only 10 minutes. Yes, you should do more. A minimum of 30 minutes is recommended by many experts. But you aren’t doing anything. Start small and add more as you are comfortable.
- Do some strength training. I know, you are not into workouts at the gym. Just start with household items. Start with something that is around two pound and do some lifting. You can graduate to larger items as you are able.
- Eat those fruits and vegetables. You knew it was coming. Every healthy living list includes it. I am not listing “stop smoking”. But you don’t have that habit – do you? Let’s eat those veggies and enjoy our fruit.
- Begin with breakfast. It’s a great time to get part of your fruit. Oatmeal and cereals rich in fiber are good choices. Whatever you choose, begin the day by eating right.
- Got fish? Well you need to. Include fish in your diet every week. Replace that red meat as often as possible. It’s good for what ails you. This fish eating is going to help your weight as well as your heart and brain.
- Add heart healthy snacks to your life. Yes walnuts, peanuts and almonds are good for your heart. Leave the chips and cookies alone and just go nuts!
- Lose that sugar sweetened soda. Get rid of the Starbucks style high calorie coffee. Learn to live on low or no calorie drinks. Save cash and lose weight. What a deal!
- Wash your hands. Your Mother was right. A good scrubbing with soap and water will protect you from many types of germs. Wash as needed.
- Learn to breathe. You say you do that all the time. If you stop you aren’t here. But concentrate on deep breathing. Several times a day, you need to practice slow, deep breathing. You will find this relaxing and may lower your blood pressure.
- Be gentle with yourself. Take time each day to give thanks for your blessings. Forgive yourself for the mistakes you have made along the way. Begin once more with a fresh slate. Determine to take one day at a time. Stick with these 10 little steps and see that healthier you in your future.
